No More Evel

When I was a kid I wanted to be Evel Knievel - the legendary daredevil who's biggest claim to fame may be his failed attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon in a rocket powered motorcycle.  We used to build bike ramps and jump over things - even people - pretending to be Evel.  Im surprised I survived or that we didnt puncture someone's lung or something.  We didnt have helmets or pads in those days!  We were daredevils!w

Evel probably would have made a good church planter - he wasn't afraid to try anything and never let failure stop him.  He always dreamed big - he even wanted to jump the Grand Canyon!

Today he passed away at 69 - not from a jump however. Apparently Evel became a Christ follower recently.  I look forward to meeting him in Heaven!

lessons

This week I learned valuable lessons about Integrity, Grace, and Adaptability.  They weren't easy lessons to learn necessarily but they were necessary.  No one will understand this - but when I look back at it, I will be reminded of what God is doing in my life.  Now im going out on a date with my wife.

King James Onlyism at the GOP Debate

Did you watch the GOP Debate?  I thought the Youtube stuff was stupid and seemed too well scripted on occasion but there was an interesting question about the bible and it was fun to see the candidates dance around the the way Anderson Cooper asked the question.  He phrased the question - do you believe every word of the bible.  But Check out the question (and responses) here or below.

Notice what question the guy really asked - He turned the bible around to its spine and said "specifically this book that I'm holding in my hand."  Clearly written on the spine of the bible was "King James Version."  I think MOST people missed that but I have no doubt whoever submitted the video deliberately used a King James Bible.  Notice the underlying arrogant tone - The answer to this question will tell us everything we need to know about you.  I may be the only one on the planet that picked up on this.  As a recovering KJV'aholic/pharisee I thought the question once again made Christians look dumb and it didn't help that the guy had bed head or some hair malfunction and looked like he belonged to a cult.

Army Strong

99.99% of the time we feel like God's power is on us when things are clicking, when everything is working right, when we have those mountain top experiences.  But when I read this: (2 Cor 12)

9But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
I realize that its when I feel like all hell is breaking loose and the problems encountered in pastoring and in life are seemingly overwhelming that God is working in my life.  Honestly - I'd rather everything be gravy and obstacle free.  But those are times when I don't need God.  So today, in spite of the trials and problems I face, the discouragement I feel, and the things in life that make me feel weak - I am army strong - for Christ's sake!

Who Pastor's The Pastor?

When I first started Crosspoint I thought I knew everything and could do everything by myself.  In the five years since we started I've learned I don't know very much at all - and I need help and advise from mentors and people who are in the trenches.  I think the biggest change I made in pastoring in the last year was finding people that I could call on for prayer, advice, and counsel.  I did that mostly through blogging and networking.

When I started blogging last year I can say that I had exactly zero pastor friends.  I also had zero blog readers.  There isnt a network of pastors in my town that I am aware of - and we are not affiliated with a denomination either.  But I knew if I was going to grow as a pastor, I needed some pastor's to pastor me.  Thus my entry into the blog world.

Using blogging, and networking with bloggers that I have met at other events, I have been able to establish relationships with Godly men who know what it's like to pastor a church plant (can I still call it a plant after 5 years?) and who I can call on from time to time for prayer and counsel.  I am so thankful for these guys too.  They know who they are (I hope) and they bless me tremendously.

Proverbs 11:14 says: Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

That is why I try and build a network of mentors both inside and outside of my church.
