This week I am starting a NEW feature on my blog. I can't promise I'll do it every week but I'll mix it up with the Freak of the Week posts. This new feature is called Church of the Week. Honestly I am SICK and TIRED of people who call themselves followers of Jesus who use their blogs and their tongues to tear down other Christians and the work of other churches - especially in their own town. Call me ecumenical, emergent, liberal, whatever. But its time we started blessing others and work on US instead of cursing others and ranting and raving over what they are doing. Its time we acted like the Body of Christ.
So I am going to feature a "Church of the Week" in Decatur and then spread out from there. Most of these churches I don't know. I probably don't know people who attend there and I probably don't know the pastor. But they name the name of Jesus and Jesus said if they are not against us - they are for us. They may have a different style of worship or a different ecclesiology, but as far as I am concerned - if they proclaim that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he died, he was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures - they are Kingdom Partners - EVEN IF THEY DONT LIKE ME OR CROSSPOINT.
Today's Church of the Week is New Genesis Community Church in Decatur. I don't think they have a web site. The church is pastored by Bishop Sam Rice. He and his wife, Yvette founded the church a few years ago and currently meet in Downtown Decatur in the old St. Ann's Catholic Church building. I have had the pleasure of meeting the Rice's. Although I have never attended, I hear the worship is off the hook. Currently the congregation is looking for a new facility to meet in. I am praying with them that they find something that will meet their needs as the old St. Ann's has several problems - not the least of which is location and parking. The building looks nice - and is over 100 years old - but flooding basements and no parking make it difficult to reach people.
Please join me in blessing the Rice's in their work and asking for God to pour out His spirit on the New Genesis Community Church.
UPDATE: The website for New Genesis Community Church is http://www.newgenesischurch.org
