Do we really want these guys...

...running our country?  They cant even figure out how to run an election for goodness sake!  Im not very political and not sure I even have a horse in the race right now - but good grief.  Could the DNC not foresee this delegate problem in Michigan and Florida coming way back before the primaries started?  Like maybe when they decided that those states primaries were "invalid!"  And now they are trying to figure out how to make them valid?  I guess they hoped there would be a clear front runner and it wouldnt matter but now that there isnt its like watching a circus.  And no matter who gets the nomination they will always go back the florida and michigan delegates and whine about it.  Here's a solution:
  • Every candidate has 50 million dollars maximum (OK 51) to spend
  • Every candidate has 51 days to campaign in each state and Puerto Rico (1 day per state & 1 Million Dollars per state)
  • At the end of the 51 days every state has a democrat and republican primary on the same day
  • There are no "super delegates" which in effect gives some people with political clout 2 votes
  • Whoever wins is the nominee for their party and they have 30 days to pick a running mate.
  • Then they hold a convention to announce the running mate
Basically run it like a general election.  They could even do it twice - once to eliminate the bottom rung of candidates and narrow it down to 2 or 3 - the second time to narrow it down to 1.  Its not that hard - unless you are a politician I guess.

After the sweep is the stage set?

Could this be the choice we have to make in November?

Unwelcome Intruders?

Are you freakin kidding me?  According to the Berkeley City Council, the US Marine Corps Recruiters need to leave Berkeley.  According to a measure passed by their city council: "If recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders,"

My Son in Law - a Sargeant in the US Marine Corps - is headed back from Iraq as we speak. He did two tours there totaling over 18 months and will defend these morons right to say what they please anywhere at anytime for almost no pay.  While they sleep soundly with their families tonight in warm multi-million dollar homes, he has been in the sand away from 2 daughters he has barely known since they were born and will return to a modest home he can barely pay for.

Semper Fi!

My $1200.00 and a long run on sentence

Not sure what Im going to do with my $1200.00 the government is going to "give" me - but Im glad its on the way.  Interesting in a presidential election year that they passed a bill to give people money to "stimulate the economy."  In my opinion this will be sort of like having Christmas season twice - a small boost but no lasting effect.

Im not an economist or a political scientist - but doesn't it seem foolish to tax people till it hurts, spend ourselves into a 9 Trillion dollar deficit, watch inflation go crazy till people cant afford things and they rack up trillions in personal debt while saving drops to less than zero - and then give them money we dont have and tell them to go spend it on stuff they cant afford and everything will be ok?

If that works - why not give us more money?  Give me $5000 and watch what I do with it to help the economy.  Heck - give us all $10,000-$20,000 and we'll have the strongest economy ever!

This quote, often attributed to someone named Alexander Tytler (but never verified apparently) seems very apropos:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

I don't know if this "quote" accurately portrays how real governments have changed over time but its certainly interesting that our politicians that we elected think the right way to fix our economy is "give" us more money.

Here is the TRUTH:  They did not GIVE us anything.  We borrowed it (cause it put us another 170 billion in the hole) and we will have to pay it back one day.  You CANNOT borrow your way to prosperity.  It violates biblical principles for finances.

Super Tuesday, Super Cells, Super Delegates

Woke up at 3:00 AM to the tornado sirens.  I wasn't really worried till they said it was on the ground headed our way and that a "Tornado Emergency" had been declared - which meant damage had been done.  Fortunately Alabama seems to have been spared the worst of last nights storms.  We were all huddled in the hallway with blankets pillows radios and flashlights just in case.

Im sort of shocked at yesterday's primary results.  I had written Huckabee off since he basically didn't have any money.  I guess right here in the buckle of the bible belt it shouldn't surprise me that he won - but it did.  He won't win it all obviously - but he's certainly not done.  Im sure Romney is wondering what happened too.  Now I can see a McCain/Huckabee ticket.   Obama really surprised me too.  How does he blow Hillary away like he did in a state that chose Huckabee?  Didn't anyone see Ted Kennedy next to him on the trail?  Interesting contrast in our state.

On a related note - Whats up with the superdelegate thing in the Democratic Party?  Basically what I see is that your vote doesnt count because Hill and Barack are going to split the vote (He's actually leading her in delegates won by election) and the superdelegates are going to decide the thing because most of them are committed to Hill already.

King James Onlyism at the GOP Debate

Did you watch the GOP Debate?  I thought the Youtube stuff was stupid and seemed too well scripted on occasion but there was an interesting question about the bible and it was fun to see the candidates dance around the the way Anderson Cooper asked the question.  He phrased the question - do you believe every word of the bible.  But Check out the question (and responses) here or below.

Notice what question the guy really asked - He turned the bible around to its spine and said "specifically this book that I'm holding in my hand."  Clearly written on the spine of the bible was "King James Version."  I think MOST people missed that but I have no doubt whoever submitted the video deliberately used a King James Bible.  Notice the underlying arrogant tone - The answer to this question will tell us everything we need to know about you.  I may be the only one on the planet that picked up on this.  As a recovering KJV'aholic/pharisee I thought the question once again made Christians look dumb and it didn't help that the guy had bed head or some hair malfunction and looked like he belonged to a cult.

Finally Decatur Does something right

Smoking Today the City of Decatur becomes smoke free.   Finally you can go to a restaurant and enjoy food without smoke and enter a convenience store and not come out smelling like you slept in a bar.  You might still smell like fried chicken livers but no second hand smoke.  Our mayor nearly vetoed this bill which was a close vote on the council.  It seems the major objection is that restaurant and bar owners might lose money because smoking and drinking go hand in hand.  I lived in Austin Texas which had a very conservative no smoking policy - no smoking in bars, restaurants etc.  Trust me - the bars were full and the restaurants were packed.  If you are a smoker I respect your right to slowly kill yourself and smell bad.  I am glad that now you can't force me to smoke and you cannot ruin my dining experience!

Sweet Home Alabama

A fight broke out on the Alabama Senate today and I thought it was too funny not to blog about.   You've got to love Alabama Politics.  It wasn't much of a fight really - more like a slap to the head - but still funny stuff.  Who would think that grown men elected to lead our state would resort to playground type behavior.  Check out the CNN Video Here
